Frequently Asked Questions

  • Second Mile Haiti is located in Northern Haiti. Our facility, including our gardens and animals are situated on a four-acre parcel of land in a rural zone called Kafoupè, outside the city of Cap Haitien. We have an additional 3 acres of land in the vicinity that is also used for growing food and animal pasture. We are located just 20 minutes from the International Airport of Cap Haitien and 15 minutes from two large hospitals.

  • 90% of our funding comes from private donors (individuals, families and businesses). 10% of our funding comes through partner NGOs (non-governmental organizations) such as churches and international non-profits.

  • Yes and No. On most occasions we do not have a need for international volunteers. Because children are staying at our facility with a parent or grandparent we do not require volunteers to play with or take care of children. Also when we have "work projects" we prefer to use local contractors and laborers who live and work to make a living right in our own neighborhood (see Our Approach). The act of employing Haitian workers for work projects not only supports the preservation of Haitian families but is also a way to participate in the local economy and community.  If you like our approach, you may want to partner with us to finance some of these projects thus giving Haitian contractors an opportunity to exercise their skills and provide for their families.

  • Occasionally we can take"trainers for the trainers" (that is, people who specialize in an area that is pertinent to our work who could provide additional training for our nurses, community health care workers, gardening staff, maintenance workers, animal  care staff, and / or our educators (i.e. lactation consultants, bee keepers, veterinarians, etc.) If you would like to offer your expertise in one of these areas we'd love to talk to you! Contact us here.

  • Yes. If you plan to be in the area and would like to learn more about Second Mile and how you can become involved you can send us an email with the dates and times that you will be in our area. We try to facilitate visits when our schedule permits.
