What is Impact?

Is it measured in a smile? Is it the way you made someone feel? The number of people you reached with life-saving services?

Here at Second Mile Haiti, we’ll never discount a genuine smile as a sign of impact. But we also use other markers.

<0.6% relapse rate

Less than 1% of children who recover from Severe Acute Malnutrition with their parent or caregiver at one of our centers, become malnourished again after recovery.

Zero Maternal Deaths

Our midwifery-led antenatal care programs prevent maternal deaths. We listen to women when they say they are in pain and take action to avoid unnecessary loss of life. Outside of our programs, a mother in Haiti dies in 1 of 283 births.

80 Full-time Jobs

Second Mile Haiti is Haitian-led. The success of our programs has meant that we now have a team of 80 Haitian professionals who carry out the mission of Second Mile Haiti all year long.

The Numbers

What is “Impact?” For Besley & Stephanie, it’s a new lease on life.

I’m happy because my child is no longer sick.
— Stéphanie

When you support Second Mile Haiti you give mothers like Stephanie a priceless gift: life for a child they thought would not live.

When he was 7-months-old Besley faced a 20-week fight with Severe Acute Malnutrition. With support from our nurses and psychologists, Besley’s mom, Stéphanie, never gave up. And thanks to support from Second Mile donors, he came out on top.

What does “Impact” mean for Odianie? It means getting to see her tiny baby grow.

The doctors told me I could lose her because she was born too small. But look at her; she’s alive. And it’s thanks to the center.
— Odianie

Odianie’s first and only child, Anastasia, was born prematurely and weighed just 1.6 kg at one month old.

Second Mile Haiti nurses came swiftly to Odianie’s aid, teaching her techniques to improve the duo’s breastfeeding experience while ensuring Anastasia got the necessary calories.

With these tools in her toolbox, Odianie fueled her daughter with the nutrients she needed to develop into the strong toddler she is today.

What does “impact” mean for the community of Janlwi? It means feeling safe at night.

Before the lights, we didn’t leave our homes after dark.
— Youseline, Resident of Janlwi

Without access to electricity, there was a time when residents of Janlwi spent dark evenings in their homes from sundown to sunrise.

Now, children can be seen jumping rope under the lights while teenagers use the lamp light to cram for exams, adults play cards and gossip, and women sell food.

Janlwi is one of nine communities to benefit from gain safety and security solar streetlight. Since 2021, we’ve installed over 330 streetlamps, covering more than 6 miles of rural road.

Impact Times Three

Second Mile Haiti focuses on three major areas of aid: Malnutrition Treatment and Prevention, Maternal and newborn Health, and Community Development in three communities in northern Haiti.
